Nursing Bras: Sizing, Cost and What to Buy When

The advice everywhere is to buy nursing bras at 36 weeks. I did that, and 3 of the 4 didn't fit by week 2. That's about S$180 on the wrong size, at the worst possible moment for returns.
Here's the sequence I'd use instead, with the numbers.
When to buy, in 3 stages
| Stage | Buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 36 weeks | 2 sleep bras, no cups | Band grows, cup is unknowable |
| Days 3 to 5 | Nothing | Milk comes in. Size peaks and is not your size |
| Weeks 2 to 4 | 2 to 3 day bras | Supply settling. This is your real size |
| Month 3+ | Top up if needed | Size is stable by now |
The days 3 to 5 row is the one that matters. Engorgement can add a full cup size for about 72 hours, and a bra fitted to that will gape by month 2.
How many you need
3 is the working number for day bras: 1 on, 1 in the wash, 1 dry. Most flats here have no dryer, and a cotton or bamboo bra takes most of a day on a rack, so 2 leaves you short by Wednesday. Add 2 sleep bras, which do the night and double as what you live in for the first fortnight.
5 total. Below that you're doing laundry around a newborn, which nobody has time for.
The 4 construction details
Ranked by how often the detail is the reason a bra gets abandoned.
- One-handed clip. You will be holding a baby with the other hand every single time. A clip that needs two hands is a bra you stop wearing by week 3.
- A drop cup that leaves the band in place. If the whole band shifts when the cup opens, the support is gone at the moment you need it most.
- No underwire in the early months. Wire that sits on a filling breast is the mechanism behind blocked ducts, and a soft-cup bra removes the risk for the price of a little shape.
- A 4-hook back or wide band. Ribcage circumference changes twice, at the end of pregnancy and again after birth, and hooks are the only free adjustment you get.
The rest of the feeding kit
Cost per wear
Day bras run about S$35 to S$90 here, sleep bras S$20 to S$40. Assume 12 months of feeding, 3 bras in rotation, 120 days each.
| Price per bra | 3 bras | Cost per wear |
|---|---|---|
| S$35 | S$105 | about S$0.29 |
| S$60 | S$180 | about S$0.50 |
| S$90 | S$270 | about S$0.75 |
The spread across the year is S$165, less than people assume in the shop. So this is a poor place to economise, and the one to buy is whichever has a clip you can work in the dark.
The saving on offer is not buying 4 of them at 36 weeks. I have no idea why every guide still recommends it.
