Material study · Bamboo

Chosen for the climate. Treasured for the touch.

Our bamboo textiles are selected for their breathability, softness and ability to stay gentle against delicate skin in warm weather.

Where the fibre comes from

Bamboo regrows from its own roots after harvest, matures in a few years, and needs little irrigation or pesticide as a crop. The fabric itself is bamboo-derived viscose, a chemical conversion, so we say sustainably sourced and we don't say chemical-free.

Made for humid air

At 90% humidity the question is what a fabric does with moisture. Bamboo muslin pulls sweat off the skin and spreads it to dry fast, so a wrapped newborn stays comfortable here in fabric weights that would leave heavier cottons damp.

Softness that compounds

The fibre is long and smooth, so the weave has little friction against newborn skin, and it softens further with every wash.

What we don't claim

Bamboo marketing is full of claims that don't survive scrutiny, including "naturally antibacterial", which regulators have acted against and we don't make. What we do instead: independent OEKO-TEX testing, and a published guide to which bamboo claims stand up.

Tested to OEKO-TEX® Standard 100

Our bamboo textiles are certified to OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, independently tested for substances harmful to human health. A swaddle spends half its life being chewed, so we wanted the test done by somebody other than us. Read what the label means, and our audit of which bamboo claims stand up.

Caring for bamboo

  • Machine wash cool (30°C) on gentle, with mild detergent.
  • Skip bleach, fabric softener and hot tumble-drying. Line dry in the shade.
  • Wash prints inside out. Iron on low if you must.
  • Soak stains in cool water before washing, since heat sets them.
