Newborn Essentials Checklist Singapore: What You Need in Baby's First 3 Months
Every expectant parent here receives the same 2 gifts: a great deal of advice, and a checklist long enough to furnish a small hotel.
Most of it never comes out of the packaging. What a newborn needs is short and repetitive. Sleep, milk, clean skin, soft cloth. The tropics cut the list further: no snowsuits, no fleece, no 2.5 tog anything.
This is the version we wish somebody had handed us. What you need, how many, and where this climate changes the answer.

What she needs for sleeping
4 categories, and the first does 5 separate jobs, which is the reason the number looks high. A bamboo swaddle is a blanket, a wrap, a pram shade, a nursing cover and an emergency changing mat. Everything in this category is washed daily and often worn damp.
Add 1 or 2 velcro wraps for the 3am re-wrap, when origami is beyond anybody. 2 or 3 fitted cot sheets in bamboo rayon, on the one-on, one-washing, one-spare rotation. A sleep sack from around 3 months, when swaddling ends.

Bathing is less frequent here than you'd think. The mopping is constant. 4 to 8 bamboo wash cloths cover baths, milk chins and the small disasters of newborn life.
1 or 2 hooded towels, in bamboo because it dries fast in a wet bathroom and stays sweet-smelling in the humidity. A tub, or a sure pair of arms. Newborn baths are short and daily bathing is optional in the first weeks.

A checklist without a total is half a checklist, and the total is what most people are anxious about. Same list, 2 columns: the version that gets a baby safely through 3 months, and the version most families end up with. I'd guess the second column is high. Ours was.

2 rules do more for the total than any individual choice. Buy 0-3 month sizes and skip newborn entirely unless the baby arrives small, because newborn size lasts a matter of weeks. Buy in 2 stages: sleep, diapering and clothing before she arrives, everything else after, once you know what she objects to.
Buy new: the car seat, always, because a seat that's been in an accident is compromised whether or not it looks it, and the mattress. Everything else is fine secondhand or handed on. A great deal of it will be given to you.
The second is accepting hand-me-downs for clothing. It's outgrown faster than it wears out.

Less than any list admits. 6 to 8 onesies, short-sleeved for fan-only rooms with a few long-sleeved for the air-conditioned ones, plus mittens, a cap for the first outings, and socks that will spend most of their lives under the sofa.

How much do newborn essentials cost in Singapore?
It depends far more on which list you buy than on where you shop. A minimum viable 3 months is sleep, diapering, clothing, bathing and a way of carrying her; everything else can wait until she is here. Buy 0-3 month sizes and not newborn, and buy in two stages.
What should I buy new and not secondhand?
The car seat and the mattress. A seat involved in an accident is compromised whether or not it looks it, and a mattress needs to be firm and clean for safe sleep. Almost everything else is reasonable secondhand.
How many swaddles does a newborn need in Singapore?
Four to six. Daily washing in humid weather means you want one on, one drying, one in the bag and one clean: bamboo dries fastest.
Does a newborn need warm clothes in Singapore?
Only for air-conditioned rooms: a few long-sleeved onesies and a sleep sack cover it. Breathable fabrics matter more than warmth.
What isn't that deserves buying for a newborn?
Shoes, wipe warmers, bulk newborn-size nappies and heavy blankets, the climate and the growth rate retire them within weeks.
