Diapering in Singapore, properly explained
Most diapering advice is written for a temperate country and assumes a temperate house: dry air, a tumble dryer, a nursery with a door. Very little of it survives contact with a flat in Singapore, where the air holds moisture all year, and the baby sleeps under air-conditioning that dries the room out while the corridor outside sits at thirty four degrees.
So we wrote the version for here. Questions parents ask
How often should you change a diaper in Singapore's climate?
Every two to three hours while awake and immediately after any stool, erring toward the shorter end. A diaper seals skin against air, and in high humidity that skin never dries between changes, so the interval that works in a temperate country is too long here.
Why is diaper rash worse in a humid climate?
Trapped moisture weakens the skin barrier, urine raises the skin's pH, and at higher pH the enzymes in stool become far more irritating. Every step of that chain runs faster when the skin inside the diaper never gets a chance to dry.
Are bamboo diapers made of bamboo?
Only the top sheet, which is the layer touching the skin. The absorbent core is fluff pulp with superabsorbent polymer and the back sheet is a waterproof film, in every disposable. That is why we call ours a luxury diaper with a bamboo-infused topsheet, and not a bamboo diaper.
Is cloth diapering practical in Singapore?
It is workable but harder than in temperate climates, and drying is the real obstacle rather than cost or principle. Thick inserts can take a day and a half on a rack in high humidity, so a rotation that assumes overnight drying will fail by the third day.
How many diapers does a baby use in the first year?
Roughly 2,300 to 2,800, or about 10 to 12 a day in the first month, easing to 5 or 6 a day by the end of the year.
