Why Does My Baby's Diaper Keep Leaking?
Almost always fit, and almost always one of three things: a leg cuff tucked inward instead of pulled out, a diaper a size too small, or a diaper a size too big. Brand is the last thing to change, not the first, and most parents change it first.
The useful diagnostic is where the wet patch is. Leaks are not random — each direction tells you something different about what went wrong at the changing mat.
Where is the leak landing?

The leg cuffs are the single most common answer and take three seconds to check. Do that before you buy anything.
How do you check the fit properly?
- Leg cuffs: the elastic frill should sit outside, standing up against the skin, not folded inward into the leg. Tucked-in cuffs channel liquid straight out.
- Waistband: two fingers should slide under it comfortably. No gaping, no red mark ten minutes later.
- Tabs: symmetrical, both at the same height, angled slightly downward rather than straight across.
- Back higher than front: the rear waistband should sit noticeably higher, which is what stops a blowout going up the spine.
- Coverage: the diaper should reach the top of the hip bones. If it sits below them, it is too small whatever the weight range on the packet says.
Is it the size, and which way?
Both directions leak, which is why size is a confusing culprit. Too small and the absorbent core simply runs out of capacity before the next change — the leak is a flood, and it usually comes with red marks at the waist or thighs. Too big and there are gaps at the legs and waist that liquid finds long before the core is full — the leak is a trickle, and the diaper feels barely used.

On sizing
What if the fit is right and it still leaks?
- Check the interval. In this climate a diaper worn three or four hours in a warm room is doing a job it was not designed for.
- Check for a growth spurt. A baby who has gained half a kilo in a fortnight has outgrown a size that fitted last month.
- Look at the stool. Very loose stool flows rather than absorbing and escapes the best-fitted diaper — that is a blowout rather than a leak.
- Consider a different cut rather than a different brand. Some babies are long and narrow, some are round; the same size fits them differently.

When is a leak a health signal?
Rarely, but it happens. Sudden frequent leaking that is not explained by fit, alongside unusually watery stools, a fever, an unsettled baby, or fewer wet nappies than usual, is worth a doctor's opinion rather than a change of brand. Dehydration moves quickly in small babies and faster in this heat.
In the meantime, the practical answer to a leaking phase is more muslin in circulation than seems reasonable — one under her on the mat, one in the bag, one on the sofa. A 120cm square absorbs a full leak and is dry again by morning without a dryer, which is more than can be said for a changing-mat cover.

Last, not first. Check leg cuffs, waistband height, tab symmetry and size before assuming the diaper is at fault. Cut varies more than quality between brands.
