Baby Has Sensitive Skin: What Should You Look for in a Diaper?
I design products for this company, which means I know what the words on the front of a diaper packet cost to put there. Some of them require a certificate and a test report. Some of them require a marketing meeting.
Here's which is which, including where it's inconvenient for us.
What to look for
Four things, and only the first two are reliably verifiable from the outside.
- Fragrance-free, and not unscented. Unscented can mean a masking fragrance was added to cover a smell. Fragrance is the most common avoidable irritant in the whole category and it's doing nothing for your baby.
- No lotions, no aloe, no added chlorine bleaching. Every additional thing on the inner layer is another thing that can react.
- A textile certification such as OEKO-TEX Standard 100, which is an actual test against a defined list of substances, and not a claim. It isn't a nutrition label, but it's a real check on what was used in processing.
- A soft, non-woven top sheet and leg cuffs that sit gently. Friction causes more redness in practice than chemistry does, and cuffs that grip are the commonest cause of a red ring.

Does breathability matter, or is it marketing?
It counts, and the claim is also routinely oversold, so both things are true. A diaper has a waterproof outer layer by necessity. What varies is whether that layer lets water vapour through while blocking liquid, which is a real material property and does reduce the humidity inside, something you want in a climate where the inside of a diaper is already warm and saturated before anything happens. What breathability doesn't do is make the interval longer. A breathable diaper left on for four hours is worse than a basic one changed at two. The frequency of changes and the drying in between outrank the material every time, and any brand implying otherwise, mine included, is selling you something.
Is bamboo better?
For the layer against the skin, it's good, for two reasons that can be tested.
Bamboo viscose is a smooth fibre with a round cross-section, so it's soft against skin and creates less friction than a coarser fibre. It moves moisture well and it's breathable. Those are real properties and they're the reason we use it.
What I wouldn't claim is that it's antibacterial in a finished product, which is a common line and isn't supported once the fibre has been through the viscose process. Bamboo viscose is a processed fibre, chemically regenerated cellulose, and the ecological story is more complicated than the leaf on the packet implies. Closed-loop processing exists. Ask about it. The word bamboo on its own tells you nothing.

If she has eczema
Then this stops being a shopping question and becomes a medical one.
Eczema in the diaper area needs a diagnosis and usually a treatment plan, because it's routinely confused with irritant rash and with yeast, and the treatments differ. Steroid creams, emollients and antifungals aren't interchangeable and guessing between them is how a rash goes on for six weeks. Ours went on for five, I think, before we got the right cream.
What you can do alongside a plan: fragrance-free everything, water and soft cloth in place of wipes at home, thorough drying, frequent changes, and diaper-free time on a towel. Fragrance-free non-biological laundry detergent with an extra rinse for everything else she wears, since the diaper is rarely the only thing touching her.
Please don't let any brand persuade you that changing a product is the answer to a skin condition. If it's inflamed, weeping, cracked or not settling, that belongs with a doctor.
A word about our own category
We sell diapers. Read the next paragraph with that in mind.
The difference between a well-made diaper and a poorly made one is real and it's smaller than the marketing budget implies. The difference between changing every two hours with proper drying and changing every four is larger than any difference between brands.
If money is tight, buy the cheaper diaper and change it more often. That's straightforwardly better for her skin, and I'd tell my sister the same thing.

Fragrance-free and lotion-free, changed more often than the packet suggests, with thorough drying at each change and barrier cream applied over the prescribed emollient.
