Bamboo vs Conventional Diapers

The diaper aisle is where marketing goes to make claims that nobody checks. Everything is natural, gentle, breathable and dermatologically something. It is worth knowing what a disposable diaper actually is, because once you do, the comparison becomes quite simple and most of the packaging becomes quite funny.

What is inside a disposable diaper?

Three functional layers, essentially unchanged for forty years.

• The top sheet — the only layer that touches skin. Conventionally a polypropylene non-woven; this is the layer bamboo versions replace.
• The absorbent core — fluff pulp plus superabsorbent polymer (SAP), the granules that turn liquid into gel and hold many times their weight.
• The back sheet — a waterproof film, sometimes microporous so vapour can escape, which is what "breathable" on the packet usually refers to.

Worth saying plainly: SAP is what makes a modern diaper work, and essentially every disposable contains it, bamboo ones included. A diaper marketed as bamboo is a diaper with a bamboo-derived top sheet — not a diaper made of bamboo.

So what does bamboo actually change?

It changes the layer against the skin, which is not nothing — it is the only layer the skin ever meets. Bamboo viscose is smoother and rounder in cross-section than a polypropylene non-woven, so there is less friction, and it moves moisture away from the skin more readily rather than letting it sit at the surface.

In a climate where friction and surface dampness are two of the four drivers of diaper rash, that is a real advantage. It is also a modest one, and it will not rescue a diaper left on for five hours.

Which claims deserve scepticism?

We sell bamboo textiles and are about to sell bamboo diapers, so we have every commercial reason to let these slide. We would rather be the brand that tells you.

• "Naturally antibacterial" — no. Raw bamboo plant contains antimicrobial compounds; the viscose process dissolves the plant structure and they do not survive into the fibre. Regulators including the US FTC have acted against this claim.
• "100% biodegradable" — almost never true of a whole diaper. The top sheet may be; the SAP core and waterproof back sheet are not. A diaper is a composite, and it composts about as well as a running shoe.
• "Chemical-free" — meaningless. Viscose is a chemical conversion process. Sustainably sourced is defensible; chemical-free is not.
• "Hypoallergenic" — an unregulated term. What is meaningful is a certification you can look up, such as OEKO-TEX, and the absence of added fragrance.
• "Eco" and "plant-based" — check what proportion, and of which layer. It is usually the top sheet.

What to actually compare

Four things, in roughly this order of importance:

• Fit on your baby. The best diaper in the world leaks if the thigh cuff is wrong. This outweighs every material consideration.
• Fragrance and lotions — added scent is a common irritant and there is no benefit to it. Unscented, every time.
• The top sheet material, since it is the only layer touching skin.
• Absorbency for your use case, particularly overnight, where a lower-absorbency diaper costs you more in laundry than it saves in price.

Everything else — the print, the wetness indicator, the recyclable outer bag — is a preference rather than a decision.

A note on what we are building

Our own bamboo diapers are in development and not yet on sale, which is why this guide recommends a way of comparing rather than a product to buy. When they arrive they will have a bamboo viscose top sheet, no added fragrance, and a SAP core — because a diaper without one does not work, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
