Do You Need Separate Day and Night Diapers?

A cot corner with folded blankets and mittens on a wooden shelf, ready for bedtime

No. Most babies don't need a separate night diaper. A day diaper in the right size, put on properly, gets most babies through the night. When it doesn't, the fix is usually the fit or one size up. It's rarely a second packet.

We sell one diaper for day and night. So of course I'd say that. Check the numbers below and make your own call.

What the everyday packets already claim

Read the claims on ordinary day diapers first. These are the figures on FairPrice's listings in October, for diapers sold for all-day use.

Look at the last row. Pampers' night-only diaper claims up to 12 hours. That's the same as the everyday diapers above it. It isn't more.

So why do brands sell them?

Pampers says its overnights use more absorbent material. I believe that. More gel holds more wee. Now think about the shelf. One packet becomes two. That's two sizes to keep track of, two half-used bags in the cupboard and two things to run out of on a Sunday night. A second line is a second sale for the brand. I'm not saying that's the only reason night diapers exist. I'm saying it's a good reason for a brand to make one, and a good reason for you to ask whether you need it.

The size range is a clue too. Pampers sells its overnights from size 3 up. Newborns get changed at most feeds, day and night, so nobody's selling them a 12-hour diaper. By the time a baby sleeps long stretches, the everyday diaper already claims to last.

Fixing the night

If the night still leaks

Try the free fixes first.

  • Pull the leg cuffs out after you fasten. Tucked-in cuffs cause most leaks.
  • Fasten the back higher than the front. Babies lie on their backs, and that's where the wee goes.
  • Point a boy down before you fasten.
  • Go up one size at night if your baby is near the top of the weight range.
  • Change at the last feed before you go to bed.
  • Keep the aircon at one temperature all night. A timer that cuts out at 3am means a sweaty baby in a full diaper.

A US parent who tried Pampers' overnights next to its regular Swaddlers wrote that she could barely tell them apart. That's one baby, so I'm not sure it'd hold for yours. A size up costs nothing extra to test, though, and a new box does.

To test one diaper for both, the 2-piece trial pack is S$2.60. Put one on at bedtime and check it at 7am.
