Boosting Your Children's Vision

Vision is the least finished of the senses at birth and the one most shaped by what happens afterwards. A newborn sees at roughly the level needed to make out a face at close range; adult-level acuity arrives somewhere around school age. Most of that is programmed, but two things parents do have a measurable effect — and one of them is not the one most people expect.

Occasional eye-crossing in the first months is normal as the two eyes learn to work together. Persistent crossing or drifting beyond about four months is not, and should be checked.
The outdoor finding
The most robust modifiable factor in childhood vision is time spent outdoors, and its effect is on short-sightedness. Multiple studies across different countries have found that children who spend more time outdoors are less likely to become short-sighted, and that increasing outdoor time can slow its progression. Somewhere around two hours a day is the figure usually cited.
The mechanism is thought to be light intensity rather than distance viewing — outdoor light is an order of magnitude brighter than indoor lighting, even on an overcast day, and that appears to influence how the eye grows. This matters more in some populations than others: rates of childhood myopia in parts of East and Southeast Asia are among the highest in the world.
Screens, honestly
Screens do not damage eyes, and the evidence that they cause short-sightedness independently is weaker than the headlines suggest. What close work of any kind does do is displace time outdoors, and that is the part that matters. Books at close range for hours have a similar profile.
- The practical rule is the twenty-twenty-twenty one: every twenty minutes, look at something twenty feet away for twenty seconds.
- Hold screens and books at arm's length rather than close to the face.
- Light the room rather than letting a screen be the only light source.
- Trade screen time for outdoor time rather than for indoor quiet time, where the choice exists.
What actually helps at each stage
- Newborns: get close, 20 to 30 centimetres, and use high-contrast patterns. Faces beat everything.
- Babies: floor time and reaching. Vision and movement develop together, and a baby who is held constantly gets less practice at both.
- Toddlers: outdoors, daily, in real light. Rolling, throwing and catching build tracking as well as coordination.
- Preschoolers: drawing, puzzles and books alongside plenty of outdoor time, not instead of it.
- All ages: sunglasses and a hat in strong sun. Ultraviolet exposure accumulates over a lifetime.
Signs that need an eye test
- An eye that turns in or out, consistently, after about four months.
- Sitting very close to screens or holding books unusually close.
- Squinting, head tilting, or covering one eye to look at something.
- Frequent eye rubbing when not tired, or complaints of headaches.
- Not making eye contact or not following faces by around three months.
- A white or unusual reflection in the pupil in a photograph — this one needs prompt assessment.
- A family history of squint, lazy eye or strong prescriptions, which raises the threshold for testing rather than waiting for symptoms.
Children do not report poor vision, because they have nothing to compare it against — a child who has always seen a blurred board assumes everyone does. That is why routine checks matter, and why a first eye test before school is worth booking even in the absence of any sign. Conditions such as amblyopia respond much better to treatment when they are found early.
Questions parents ask
Does screen time damage children's eyes?
There is no good evidence that screens damage the eye. The concern is that close work of any kind displaces time outdoors, and outdoor time is the factor most consistently linked to lower rates of short-sightedness. Trading screen time for outdoor time is the useful change.
