Why You Should Use Bamboo Rayon Sheets for Your Baby's Cot

The sheet is the piece nobody photographs. Yet by the end of her first year your baby will have spent more hours against it than in any outfit you chose — up to sixteen a day, cheek pressed to the weave, through every Singapore night. It deserves to be chosen the way you chose the cot itself: slowly, by hand-feel, with a certain conviction.
Bamboo rayon is where that conviction led us. Bamboo pulp, spun into a fibre finer than most cottons, becomes a fabric that drapes like silk, breathes like linen, and takes more softness from every wash. Here is what that means once the lights are out.
Why is bamboo rayon better for a baby's skin?
Newborn skin is roughly a third thinner than yours, which is why it answers heat and friction so quickly — the rash, the dry patch, the pink cheek in the morning. Bamboo rayon fibres are smooth and rounded rather than coarse, so as your baby turns her head through the night, the fabric gives way rather than argues.
For eczema-prone and sensitive skin, that gentleness is the whole point. Mothers often come to us after a coarser sheet has left its signature on a sleeping face; once they change, the difference tends to show within the week.
Do bamboo sheets keep babies cool in Singapore's heat?
This is where the fabric earns its place. Our nights hold at 27 to 29 degrees, the humidity never quite lifts, and babies are famously poor at regulating their own temperature. Bamboo rayon wicks moisture away from the skin and releases it into the air, rather than letting it pool beneath a warm little head.
It is also perceptibly cooler than cotton under the hand; the first touch carries a faint chill, even in a warm room. A baby who is not damp and prickly settles sooner and wakes less, and the whole house sleeps on it.
Are bamboo cot sheets safe?
A safe cot sheet is a fitted one; there is no second opinion on this. Safe-sleep guidance is unambiguous that nothing loose belongs in the cot, so the sheet must hold the mattress closely, elastic all the way round, and stay put when your baby works her way into the corner. Ours are cut in rectangular and oval shapes so the fit is exact, whichever cot you have chosen.
Look for OEKO-TEX certification as well — independent confirmation that the fabric has been tested for harmful substances. Every Little Rei sheet carries it, and we have written separately on what the label actually promises.
How do bamboo sheets hold up to washing?
A cot sheet lives in the wash, so it must be equal to it. Bamboo rayon is: rather than pilling or roughening, it takes on softness with every cycle, the way good linen does. A cool, gentle wash is all it asks, and in our climate it dries on the line before the afternoon storm arrives.
- A cool, gentle cycle with a mild detergent
- No fabric softener — bamboo takes on softness by itself
- Line-dry, or tumble low, to keep the fibres smooth
- Two sheets in rotation, so a fresh one is always folded and waiting
For a cooler cot, pair a bamboo sheet with one light, breathable layer above — never anything heavy.
Is bamboo a more sustainable choice?
The quieter reason, and perhaps the better one. Bamboo grows at an almost improbable rate without replanting, asks far less water than conventional cotton, and needs no pesticides worth mentioning. If the nursery you are assembling is meant to tread lightly on the world, bedding is a graceful place to begin.
The case for bamboo, briefly
Softer against skin a third thinner than yours. Cooler through the wet heat of a Singapore night. Lighter on the planet, and better after fifty washes than the day it arrived. For the surface your baby spends most of her early life against, we know of nothing that argues with it.
Questions parents ask
Is bamboo rayon safe for newborns?
Yes. Bamboo rayon is smooth, breathable and gentle on newborn skin. Choose a snug fitted sheet with OEKO-TEX certification and keep the cot free of loose bedding.
Are bamboo sheets cooler than cotton?
Yes. Bamboo rayon wicks moisture away from the skin and feels slightly cooler to the touch than cotton, a real difference on warm, humid Singapore nights.
How do I wash bamboo cot sheets?
Machine wash cool on a gentle cycle with mild detergent, skip fabric softener, and line-dry or tumble on low. Bamboo rayon becomes softer with every wash.
Do I need a fitted sheet for a cot?
Yes. Safe-sleep guidance says nothing loose in the cot, so always use a fitted sheet that grips the mattress firmly on all sides.
