Swaddling 101: How to Swaddle, When to Stop and What to Use in Singapore

Swaddling is wrapping a newborn snugly in one thin cloth, arms in and hips loose, to quiet the startle reflex. A swaddled baby sleeps on her back in a single breathable layer, and the wrapping stops at the first sign of rolling, which the American Academy of Pediatrics notes can begin as early as 2 months.
Six questions follow, each answered in a few lines and each with the longer guide named beneath it. Little Rei makes bamboo muslin swaddles and I write their specification, so read the fabric section as the view of an interested party.
What is swaddling?
A wrap that holds a newborn's arms against her body while her legs stay free to bend. Newborns startle in their sleep, the arms fly outward and the movement wakes them; a snug cloth across the arms and chest damps that reflex. It is a settling technique for the first weeks of life. It is not a requirement, and a baby who settles with her arms free does not need it.
The long versions
How do you swaddle a baby?
With a thin square of about 120 × 120 cm and five movements. The sequence below follows the AAP's description.
- Spread the cloth flat and fold one corner down.
- Lay the baby face-up with her head above the folded edge.
- Bring the left corner across her body and tuck it under her, with the arm held at her side.
- Bring the right corner across and tuck it under her left side.
- Fold or twist the bottom loosely and tuck it under one side, leaving her legs room to bend up and out.
Two checks finish it. Two or three fingers should fit between the cloth and her chest, and her hips should move freely, because the AAP reports that wrapping the legs straight and tight can lead to hip dislocation or dysplasia. The Lullaby Trust adds a third: nothing above the shoulders, so that loose material cannot cover her face.
Technique and troubleshooting
When should you stop swaddling?
At the first sign that she is trying to roll. The AAP's wording is to stop as soon as a baby shows any signs of trying to roll over, and it notes that some babies start working on rolling as early as 2 months. The Lullaby Trust gives the reason: a baby wrapped with her arms inside cannot use them to move out of a position she has rolled into.
The signs are small. A strong lean to one side in the cot, a hip lifted off the mattress, a kick during play that carries her onto her side. Any one of them ends arms-in swaddling that day, whatever her age.
| Stage | What to use | Arms | What ends the stage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Birth until any sign of rolling | A 120 × 120 cm muslin square, or a velcro swaddle wrap | In | The first rolling attempt, from about 2 months in some babies |
| First sign of rolling | Stop the arms-in wrap the same day | Out | Nothing: this is a one-way change |
| Rolling, to the toddler years | A sleep sack in the lowest TOG the room allows | Out | She outgrows the sack |
| Awake, at any age | The same muslin as a pram shade, burp cloth or play mat | Not applicable | The cloth wears out |
On stopping, rolling and what comes next
Is swaddling safe in Singapore's heat?
Yes, if the wrap is the only layer that counts. The AAP states that swaddling can increase the chance a baby will overheat and lists the signs: sweating, damp hair, flushed cheeks, heat rash and rapid breathing. The Lullaby Trust specifies a thin muslin or thin cot sheet, never a blanket, with her head uncovered and no extra bedding over the top.
One part of that guidance does not transfer. The Lullaby Trust's room range of 16 to 20°C is written for British bedrooms, and I don't know a Singapore nursery that holds it, air-conditioned or not. The adjustment is to dress for the room you have: a single open-weave wrap over a nappy in a fan-cooled room, over a short-sleeve bodysuit in an air-conditioned one. Then check the back of her neck.
Damp skin there means a layer comes off.
Three rules don't change with the climate. She sleeps on her back for every sleep, on a firm, flat surface. The AAP advises against weighted swaddles and weighted blankets, which press on a baby's chest and lungs. A swaddle isn't for a car seat, a carrier or a pram.
On safety, layers and naps
Which fabric is best for a swaddle?
A thin, open-weave muslin. Muslin names the weave and not the fibre, so the choice inside it is between cotton and bamboo rayon, and both satisfy the safe-sleep guidance on thin material. I specify bamboo rayon for ours because it moves moisture off the skin faster and dries faster on a rack in this humidity. Cotton costs less and tolerates a hot tumble-dryer better.
| Fabric | Airflow | Moisture | Use it for | Drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bamboo rayon muslin | Open weave, high | Wicks quickly and dries quickly | Sleep in fan-cooled and air-conditioned rooms | Costs more; a thin, poorly finished one is flimsy |
| Cotton muslin | Open weave, high | Absorbs, then feels damp sooner | Sleep in cooler air-conditioned rooms; the rough jobs | Slower to dry; can stiffen with washing |
| Stretch jersey or knit wrap | Closed knit, lower | Keeps more moisture near the skin | Air-conditioned rooms only | Runs warmer than a muslin with the same label |
| Fleece, quilted or weighted | Low | Traps heat and moisture | Nothing in this climate | Overheating; the AAP advises against weighted swaddles |
Our bamboo muslin is certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, which tests the finished textile for harmful substances. It is not a claim about softness or cooling. Our velcro wrap is a stretch bamboo rayon and not a muslin, so by my own table it is the warmer of the two and suits an air-conditioned room. The whole range is at littlerei.com/collections/swaddles.

How many swaddles do you need?
Four to six full-size squares for a newborn in Singapore. The arithmetic is one on the baby, one drying, one in the bag and one clean, with a spare or two for the days when the first is used as a burp cloth before breakfast. A swaddle that touches milk is washed that day, and in this humidity the drying time sets the number more than the baby does.
Buy the 120 × 120 cm size for wrapping. The 70 × 70 cm travel squares are too small to tuck around a baby and belong in the pram bag. The wrapping itself lasts two to four months; the squares stay in use for years afterwards, which is the stronger argument for buying good ones.
On the specifics
What are the basic rules of swaddling?
Baby on her back for every sleep, on a firm flat surface. One thin layer, snug at the chest with two or three fingers of room, loose at the hips, nothing above the shoulders. Stop as soon as she shows any sign of trying to roll, which the American Academy of Pediatrics says can be as early as 2 months.
Do you have to swaddle a newborn?
No. Swaddling is a settling technique, not a requirement. It helps many newborns sleep by damping the startle reflex, and some babies settle better with their arms free from the start. An unswaddled newborn sleeps safely on her back in a fitted sleep sack or a single layer.
What are the signs a baby is about to roll?
A strong lean to one side in the cot, a hip lifting off the mattress, or a kick during play or tummy time that tips her onto her side. Any of these means arms-in swaddling stops that day. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that some babies begin working on rolling at about 2 months.
Is muslin or jersey better for swaddling in Singapore?
Muslin. Its open weave lets air through, where a stretch jersey is a closed knit that keeps more heat and moisture near the skin. The Lullaby Trust advises lightweight material such as a thin muslin or thin cot sheet. Keep jersey and velcro stretch wraps for air-conditioned rooms.
How big should a swaddle blanket be?
About 120 × 120 cm for wrapping a newborn, which leaves enough cloth to tuck under her on both sides. Smaller squares of around 70 × 70 cm work as burp cloths and pram shades and are too small to hold a wrap.
How many swaddles should I buy for a newborn?
Four to six full-size muslins in a humid climate: one in use, one drying, one in the bag and one clean, plus a spare or two. Add one velcro wrap if folding at night defeats you.
Can a baby sleep swaddled in an air-conditioned room?
Yes. At 25 to 26°C, a single muslin wrap over a short-sleeve bodysuit is usually enough; the wrap itself counts as a layer. Check the back of her neck: warm and dry is right, damp means one layer too many. No hat indoors and no blanket over the swaddle.
Are weighted swaddles safe?
The American Academy of Pediatrics advises against them. Its guidance says not to use weighted swaddles or weighted blankets, which can place too much pressure on a baby's chest and lungs.
What room temperature is right for a swaddled baby?
The Lullaby Trust recommends 16 to 20°C, a figure written for the UK. Few Singapore bedrooms reach it, so adjust the clothing instead: one thin muslin over a nappy in a fan-cooled room, over a short-sleeve bodysuit with the air-conditioning on, and check her neck for dampness.
